ABOUT
Since 2022, Markus Lang has held the position of Principal Bass in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared as Guest Principal with leading ensembles across Scandinavia, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra as well as performing with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Markus studied at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music with Hal Robinson, Joseph Conyers, Edgar Meyer, and Albert Laszlo. While at Juilliard, Markus was very active with historical performance practice and toured Scandinavia and New Zealand with the school’s early music ensemble, Juilliard 415.
Equally committed to contemporary repertoire, Markus explores works that showcase the diverse colors and capabilities of the double bass. In November 2023, Markus released a performance of Kaija Saariaho's work for Double Bass and Electronics, "Folia," on GSOPlay, now available on YouTube, to honor the late composer. Most recently, he performed Tan Dun's Double Bass Concerto, Wolf Totem with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
Markus was born in Manhattan and grew up traveling between his childhood home in New Jersey and his family’s summer cabin in Viitasaari, Finland. He dedicated several summers to prestigious festivals, including the Verbier Festival, Music Academy of the West, and the Lucerne Festival Academy. Markus has the privilege to play on a rare English double bass by George Panormo, generously loaned to him by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
